Fishing at Chinchilla Weir
The Chinchilla Weir on the Condamine River is a favourite haunt for anglers of all skill levels. Cast a line and try your luck with yellowbelly (golden perch), bass, and catfish in the calm, scenic waters. With a shaded riverbank and a relaxed pace of life, it’s the perfect spot to sit back, crack open a cold drink, and enjoy the kind of unhurried fishing session that country Queensland does best.
Cactoblastic Monument
This quirky roadside monument pays tribute to one of Australia’s most remarkable environmental success stories — the biological control of the invasive prickly pear cactus using the Cactoblastis cactorum moth in the 1920s. The Chinchilla region was ground zero for this extraordinary effort, which saved millions of hectares of Queensland farmland. It’s a surprisingly fascinating stop that puts a whole new spin on the history of the land you’re travelling through.
Chinchilla Historical Museum
While not strictly outdoors, the Chinchilla Historical Museum spills out into its grounds in a way that makes it feel like an open-air adventure. The site is packed with fascinating relics of pioneering life, vintage machinery, and exhibits that tell the story of the Western Downs region. Set aside a good chunk of time — there’s far more to discover here than you’d expect, and it pairs brilliantly with a picnic on the surrounding grounds.
Let the Kids Loose – Botanic Garden Waterpark
On a hot Queensland day, the waterpark within the Chinchilla Botanic Gardens is an absolute godsend for families. Kids can splash and play to their hearts’ content while parents relax in the shade of the beautiful garden surrounds. The gardens themselves are a lovely place for a stroll, with well-maintained grounds and a tranquil atmosphere that makes it just as enjoyable for adults looking to unwind after a long stretch of highway driving. Free entry everyday
the Chinchilla TARDIS and Big Watermelon
No visit to Chinchilla is complete without snapping a photo with two of its most iconic landmarks. The Big Watermelon is a proud nod to the region’s status as the watermelon capital of Australia, and it’s an obligatory roadside selfie stop. Nearby, the Chinchilla TARDIS (#1 Attraction in Chinchilla – TripAdvisor) — a full-sized replica of the Doctor Who police box — is a delightful surprise that draws fans from far and wide. Together, they make for a wonderfully eccentric photo opportunity that perfectly captures Chinchilla’s personality. You can also make the most of it with Free Cosplay Costumes provided – hours 9am – 8pm (closed during storms).
Chinchilla Monthly Country Markets at the Showgrounds
Held monthly at the Chinchilla Showgrounds, the Country Markets are a wonderful celebration of local produce, handmade crafts, and outback community spirit. Browse stalls overflowing with fresh fruit and vegetables, homemade preserves, local art, and handcrafted goods while chatting with the friendly locals who make this region so special. It’s the kind of laid-back, authentic market experience that city folk dream about — and it’s well worth timing your visit around.
Camping & Caravanning at Chinchilla Weir and Charley’s Creek Campground
For those who want to slow right down and soak in the surroundings, Chinchilla offers two wonderful campgrounds. The Chinchilla Weir Campground puts you right on the water’s edge, ideal for fishing, swimming, and stargazing under unpolluted outback skies. Charley’s Creek Campground is another great option, offering a peaceful bush setting perfect for families, couples, and grey nomads making their way across Queensland. Both sites provide a genuine taste of relaxed outback camping life.
Waterskiing at Chinchilla Weir
The wide, smooth stretches of water at Chinchilla Weir make it a brilliant spot for waterskiing and other water sports. Locals and visitors alike take full advantage of the calm conditions, making it a lively and fun destination on warm weekends. Whether you’re a seasoned skier or a first-timer keen to give it a crack, the weir offers plenty of space to carve up the water and make some serious memories.
Fossicking for Petrified Wood in Chinchilla
Chinchilla is one of the few places in the world where you can find petrified wood, and fossicking for it is a genuinely unique outback experience. The region’s ancient forests fossilised over millions of years, leaving behind stunning timber-turned-stone specimens scattered across the local landscape. Grab a fossicking licence, head out to designated areas, and spend a few hours hunting for your very own piece of prehistoric Queensland to take home as a one-of-a-kind souvenir.
